The Oeschinen Lake (Oeschinensee) is a mountain lake in the municipality of Kandersteg in the canton of Bern. It is one of the most famous and most photographed lakes in Switzerland and lies at an altitude of 1578 meters above sea level.
The lake is surrounded by the magnificent Bernese Oberland mountains with Blüemlisalp, Oeschinenhorn and Doldenhorn in the south and Dündenhorn and Zallershorn in the north. The length of the Oeschinensee is 1.6km, and it is about one kilometer wide. The lake is also over 50m deep. The lake is fed through a series of mountain creeks and drains underground.
During the warm summer months, the mountain lake becomes a bathing lake used by hikers and day-trippers for a cool refreshment. From the end of July, the water temperature of the Oeschinensee can rise to 20 ° C.
